The Linear Ceramic Culture |
| | |
Geographic Setting : Coming from the north and northeast, the tribes of the linear ceramic cultures established themselves in the east occupying a part of the earlier territory of the Starcevo-Cris culture, then expanded their territory to the southeast of Transylvania and to the northeast of Valachia.
Habitation : The rectangular homes are built on the ground or partially buried; they present a rudimentary architecture and reveal few furnishings.
Material Means : Lithium tools using flint, obsidian or stone, "bottier" hatchets are among the characteristic elements. There are few tools of horn or bone. Two categories of ceramics are known ; from among these we single out one fine ceramic, ash or black in color. The most common forms are bitruncated bowls with a neck or a base. The decoration is mostly of linear or spirals incisions, with impressions evoking musical notation.
Economics : The practice of agriculture and the breeding of animals are in evidence. In the first phase, the domestication of cows seems to be predominate, slowly replaced by goats and sheep.
Funeral Rites : The practice of burial is in evidence ; in the most recent phase, the practice of incineration is still unconfirmed. |
